Sustainability focus: Brand inspiration for S/S 23

With sustainability becoming an increasingly relevant priority in fashion, larger brands are starting to invest in solutions to reduce their environmental impact. This was a recurring theme during the S/S 23 fashion shows, where initiatives include reusing existing materials and developing new materials. Check out the collections from some big names in the market below:


Balmain

Under the command of Olivier Rousteing, Balmain (France) showcased via its collection the dream of a future where brands are more responsible and transparent, and consumers can make better choices. In addition, the creative director mentioned the team is constantly working to make the brand more sustainable.


A key point of the collection is its use of eco-friendly fabrics, including FSC and Ecovero-certified viscose, sustainable linen and natural fibers, such as sustainably harvested raffia. The brand avoided dyeing, which can cause water pollution by using chemical dyes, and instead adopted a raw look for its pieces.






Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney (UK) presented her most sustainable collection to date, using 87% sustainable materials. The highlight of the show was the regenerative cotton – the result of a three-year pilot project in Turkey – which adopts the regenerative agriculture method for a cotton production process that captures carbon in the soil.


In addition to clothing, the bags were made with non-leather alternatives using grapes and mycelium.









Gabriela Hearst


Another key collection was by Gabriela Hearst (Uruguay). Most pieces were based on reuse of fabrics from leftover stock and upcycling. Additionally, the carbon emissions related to the collection were offset in partnership with Climeworks.


Gabriela Hearst welcomed climate activist Xiye Bastida as a model on its catwalk, showing the fashion house’s dedication towards sustainability.
